Well known and widely respected PR specialist Angela Barter is not only a recognised thought leader in the public relations industry, she is also a trailblazer, spearheading the new and exciting world of Green PR locally, exploring new possibilities and establishing new horizons for clients and peers alike.
Having established @ Communications 10 years ago as a niche PR agency catering specifically for companies requiring cost-effective, value-for-money public relations (PR) services, Angela is now blazing the trail in a new but fast-growing niche: Green PR. Her pioneering work in this field allows clients to translate their eco-activities into measurable returns and sets the benchmark for other agencies venturing into this new territory.
Angela’s passion for Green PR and her consistently growing knowledge on eco-issues such as energy and water efficiency, waste management, biodiversity conservation, environmental education, climate change, carbon footprints, green building and key environmental groups, amongst others, ensures that she offers refreshing insights and thought-provoking ideas that keep her audiences at Public Relations, Corporate Communications and Media Relations Conferences, Seminars and Workshops on the edge of their seats.
Her groundbreaking work in the new field of Green PR is grounded in a solid understanding of classic PR practices and an impressive track record in the tough and demanding PR industry. Together with key industry leaders within the sustainability arena, Angela is also equipped to guide and direct companies, who not only want to communicate their effort and investment in eco-friendly and sustainability initiatives, but would like to reflect their commitment to sustainability by ‘Walking… and then talking’.
Having completed her school career at Clarendon Girls’ High School, Angela attended Port Elizabeth Technikon where she majored in Communication Science and Public Relations. Armed with further training, including a Diploma in Interior Design and a Public Speaking Certificate from Toastmasters, Angela gained a wealth of experience as the Public Relations Officer and later as Public Relations & Advertising Consultant for a number of diverse companies, as well as Senior Account Executive at PR Dynamics Johannesburg, working with high-profile clients such as Merial, GlaxoSmithKline and Gillette.
In January 2003, with a hired computer, a budget of just R150 and a great deal of passion and enthusiasm, Angela founded @ Communications to provide solutions to an identified niche: companies requiring professional, yet cost-effective, value-for-money public relations (PR) services and PR project management. It has since grown into an award-winning Public Relations consultancy and, today, @ Communications is an established, well-respected and thriving PR company with a highly dedicated, experienced team of account executives and an impressive list of key clients.
With more than 15 years of experience in the public relations industry, Angela displays impressive expertise in creating product, brand and company awareness within the consumer market. Her remarkable background spans innovative and unique public relations for leading brands such as the Swatch Group (Omega, Longines, Rado, Swatch, Tissot, Calvin Klein), Electrolux, Lacoste South Africa and South Africa’s top eyewear brands: Fendi, Calvin Klein and Nike. @ Communications was also a PR company of choice for Madiba’s 46664 concert in Johannesburg, as well as the PR company selected to launch the first ever Android operating phone on behalf of LEAF/HTC in South Africa.
Recognised as an outstanding businesswoman with a Nedbank Business Achiever Award (Best Start-up Company in Gauteng Category), both for her business acumen and her invaluable contribution to the South African economy, Angela is also actively involved in supporting her community, most notably through her work for Abraham Kriel Childcare, where she also serves on the Abraham Kriel Childcare Marketing Committee. Angela is also a registered member of PRISA (Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa) as a Chartered Public Relations Practitioner (CPRP) as well as a member of her local Businesswomen Association, empowering – and learning from – other women who are making a difference in their respective industries.
