What makes Frontline®Plus so effective?
Frontline®Plus combines fipronil, the active ingredient in other Frontline brand products, and (S)-methoprene, an insect growth regulator (IGR), which target the flea life cycle at all points. The lipophilic nature of fipronil and (S)-methoprene ensures that the product spreads quickly, forming a reservoir on the animal’s sebaceous glands and hair. The combination of these two active ingredients assists in killing fleas on animals and prevents the development of immature fleas in the animals’ immediate environment.
What role do Fipronil and (S)-methoprene play?
Fipronil interferes with the nerve cells of fleas, causing fleas to become disorientated and hyperactive before they die.This makes it is easier for pet owners to see the fleas that have been affected by the product.
(S)-methoprene is a juvenile hormone analog. The compound is absorbed by fleas and, in females, is concentrated in the ovaries. It has an ovicidal activity on eggs laid from exposed fleas and prevents metamorphosis in the last larval or pupal stage, breaking the biological life cycle and preventing reoccuring infestation.
Why is Frontline®Plus the ideal flea and tick prevention course?
Both fipronil and (S)-methoprene are highly insoluble in water and highly lipophilic, ensuring efficacy is not diminished if the animal gets wet when swimming or being washed. Fipronil’s selective mode of action means that it preferentially targets invertebrates and is the ideal course of flea and tick prevention for:
- dogs and puppies over eight weeks of age and in breeding, pregnant or lactating females; and
- cats and kittens over eight weeks of age and in breeding, pregnant or lactating females.
